Overview & Reviews
Last year's integrated child safety seat has mysteriously disappeared from press kit and dealer order sheet radar. Other big news is the availability of the optional 5.2-liter V8 engine in 2WD models, and a six-cylinder that qualifies the JGC as a transitional low emission vehicle (TLEV) in California. Refinements have been made to the ABS system, entry-level cassette stereo and floor carpet fit. In January, a sporty TSi model debuted with monotone paint, special aluminum wheels and other goodies.
- Lightweight unibody construction, excellent on and off-road manners, optional V-8, standard ABS, dual airbags, lots of standard equipment
- Spare tire hogs cargo area, engines hog gas, not as roomy inside as some competitors, price climbs rapidly as options are added

Great but poor fuel economy - 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee
By e123499 - May 24 - 10:00 amThe Jeep is a great vehicle. Pretty reliable, very comfortable, and very nice looking. The V6 is definitly powerful enough for everday driving but if your looking to tow, go for the V8. The only thing I would have to say that is bad about this vehicle is the fuel economy, everything else is great. And yes there ARE cup holders in the back seat.

V8 Laredo 4x4 - 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee
By ford_guy351 - May 23 - 2:13 pmThis was the first car I had when I got my license and I bought it becouse it looked very good and I wanted the V8 power. Soon after I bought it though I relized that it was a typical Mopar useless and unreliable. I figured out that it leaked oil and it began to make a popping noise which was the drivers side C/V axle shaft boot had worn out and soon after the whole thing snapped and I had to replace it. But the engine itself has never had any major problems and currently it has 136k miles. The interior is nice but the stock speakers were blown when I got it and the passenger side heated seat refuses to work on high but the leather is very nice.

1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee Ltd - 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee
By DougNH - April 13 - 2:00 amMy Jeep has been nothing but good to me. I really use it off road plus drive it to work everyday. Its been the perfect vehicle for someone who truly uses their 4WD. In winter, Ive driven it through a solid foot + of snow for hundreds of feet and it made it (barely).. try that in a Ford Explorer HA! Great vehicle for the northeast

178,000 miles and adding more - 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee
By BYRKSTER - March 20 - 4:40 pmI love my 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee! I found her next to a garage covered in green goo, from setting underneath some pine trees for -FOUR- years, asked the owner if they were interested in selling, they said yes. I paid $700.00, stuck in a new battery and she fired up and I took off down the road towards my garage. Let the fun begin Flushed all the systems, changed the exhaust, brakes, rotors, calipers, shocks, fluids, sparks plugs, wires, cap & rotor, all had rusted, but after four years setting she still ran great! Took more time cleaning the exterior then actual replacing parts, but she turned out great!

Cheap Jeep - 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee
By Sad Jeep Owner - February 16 - 2:00 amBrakes and rotors on the vehicle are terrible and undersized. The tranny leaks, rear main leaks, rear end had to be replaced at 80k and I dont even go off road. The paint is thin and fades, chips bad. Tire eater, noisy v- 8 engine. Jarring ride, makes people bounce around.

These cars last forever - 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee
By Mark Paul - January 27 - 11:10 amI have owned a previous Jeep Laredo 4WD and had over 208,000 miles on it when I sold it for $2,850.00 last week. This one just turned 200,000 miles and runs perfectly. Very dependable and good looking. Excellent value for the money. I paid $4000.00 for a loaded model and everything works.

An old friend. - 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee
By Todd Rode - November 23 - 2:00 amThe Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited is a finely appointed, durable and comfortable vehicle. It has been my primary source of transportation for 5 years and I have found the vehicle to be as fun to drive today as the day I bought it.

For Sale - 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee
By No American Cars - October 24 - 10:00 amJeep was my first American made car out of three cars. It was my most expensive and most disappointed investment. It is fun to drive and has a great look, but dont judge a book by its cover. I have had brake problems from day one. My horn use to go off for no reason, my check engine light is on for no apparent reason, and my rear differential is shot! I have fixed most of those things and intending to sell right away for a killer price...only $8K.
